'Polygamy saves me from women'

MUSICIAN Taruvinga Manjokota aka Sugar Sugar believes his two wives are a blessing, saying they play the crucial role of saving him from contracting sexually-transmitted infections.

“I know my weaknesses. Had I not been married to two wives, I could have been dead by now. I thank God for that because when I revisit the circumstances that surround the death of my colleagues, fear grips me.

“My wives are different in character; one is outgoing and ndiye andinofamba naye kwese kwandinoenda ( she is the one that I go with everywhere) and mumwe wacho anoda hake kugara pamba (the other one loves staying at home). Saka ndinenge ndakachengetedzeka, (so I will be looked after)” Manjokota said.

When on national tours, one of his wives serves as a cashier at the concerts.

“Apart from saving me from contracting STIs, one of my wives is a cashier in the band. This came after the realisation that I was losing a lot of money at the gate while I was on the stage.

“Now I cannot complain, my wives are a blessing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Manjokota is back in Harare after years of touring Mozambique and South Africa.

He is residing in Stoneridge at a residential stand he was given by flamboyant businessperson Philip Chiyangwa after the musician released album Chimwe neChimwe.

While in the country, the Juliana hitmaker frequents Gweru and Chiredzi among other mining and farming areas.

“As an artiste, it is always important to think outside the box. We used to enjoy good business in Harare back in the day when the economy was still functioning.

“Right now, most promoters are interested in promoting Zimdancehall artistes mainly because they are cheap to hire as the bulk of them do not own backing groups like in sungura, as a result Zimdancehall music tends to sound more popular.

“Owing to this, I have established a number of bases in Chiredzi and Gweru among other areas as a survival strategy.

“My music is more appealing to rural folks and mining towns and Gweru is surrounded by mines and the business is fairly good there for me,” said the Samaita Express pay master.

Manjokota, whom most people think has been relegated to the dustbin of history, is working on his forthcoming eighth studio album to be titled Zvakarongeka MuSugar (Pakutsemurirana).—Vasco Chaya
