Jealous man torches pregnant lovers' home

A jealous Mutasa man has been caged for 36 months for torching his pregnant lovers’ home on suspicion she was having an affair while carrying his child.

Lameck Nyana, 41, of Musewe Village under Chief Mutasa was convicted on his own plea of guilt by magistrate Innocent Bepura for burning down his mistresses’ two-hut-home.

Nyana destroyed property worth $1 600 in the arson attack.

Of the 36-month-jail term, six months were suspended on condition he compensates the full amount by May 30 this year.

It was the State’s case that Nyana went to his lover’s home — Sikuluse Mhlanga — on March 12 this year and knocked but could not get any response.

The love-struck but jealous man, who had earlier seen his girlfriend with another man, then went to Mhlanga’s neighbour where he borrowed some matches before returning to torch her two huts.

Both huts and all her belongings were reduced to ashes and nothing was recovered.

During mitigation, Nyana said he did not have conclusive evidence that Mhlanga was indeed having an affair with another man.

He, however, said he could not bear the thought of her seeing someone else, especially during a time she was carrying his child.
