Soldier torches ex's house

A Kwekwe-based soldier has been thrown behind bars after he set his ex-girlfriend’s house on fire, destroying property worth over $700.

Zibusiso Ndebele who was stationed at 5.1 Battalion in Kwekwe pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Esigodini resident magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa facing charges of negligently causing serious damage to property.

Magistrate Muchemwa sentenced Ndebele to 24 months imprisonment.

Six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour. A further six months were also suspended on condition Ndebele restitutes a sum of $708 before March 31.

Ndebele was left to serve 12 months effective.

According to the State, on January 28 at around 5pm, the complainant Priscilla Sibanda, 26 of Mawabeni area in Esigodini was drinking beer at Sizanani Night Club together with the accused.

The two had an altercation over an undisclosed matter.

Citing the ugliness of the argument, the complainant later left and proceeded to her relatives’ homestead in the area where she spent the night.

The following day at around 3pm, the accused proceeded to the complainant’s homestead in search of her but he could not locate her.

Angered by the move, he set the thatched room on fire leading to the destruction of property.

Nothing was recovered from the house.
