Robbers stab cop

TWO suspected robbers who allegedly stabbed a cop to evade arrest appeared in court this week.

Kundai Gava, 29, of 44 Muonde Street Mufakose and Davison Mabasa, 36, of Block 9 Mbare Flats appeared before Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande charged with robbery.

Gava and Mabasa were denied bail by Makwande and advised to approach the High Court after the court ruled that they were not perfect candidates.

The complainant is Talent Muchabaya, 31, of 5569 Kuwadzana 7 in Harare.

Prosecutor Sabastian Mutizirwa alleged that on August 20 around 3am the accused persons hatched a plan to steal from unsuspecting people in the city.

They proceeded to corner Kwame Nkrumah and Park Street in town and approached Muchabaya.

The court heard that one of the accused persons hit Muchabaya with an unknown object and he fell down.
It was alleged that Gava and his accomplices began assaulting Muchabaya with clenched fists and booted feet.
One of the accused persons produced a knife and pointed it at Muchabaya while another searched his pockets. The court heard that Gava and Mabasa then took $70 and a Nokia cell phone valued at $20 from Muchabaya’s pockets.

The duo sped from the scene and Muchabaya gave chase and caught up with the accused persons at Chicken Slice corner Herbert Chitepo and Seventh Street.

Muchabaya alerted members of the public to assist him apprehending Gava and Mabasa.
An unidentified cop attempted to manage the situation but got stabbed in the stomach before Gava and Mabasa sped off.

The duo was later arrested on September 3 following a tip-off and nothing was recovered.
